We eat burgers at least once a week because they’re delicious and also because they’re kind of brainless and some days it feels like brain cells are in short supply by dinnertime? Anyway, I typically cook beef burgers but, looking to switch things up, I recently whipped up Italian Sausage and Peppers Burgers, and they are to die for! Cheeseburgers meet Italian sausage and peppers is the mashup you never knew you needed until now. These Italian sausage-based burgers can be made in a skillet on the stovetop, or sizzled up on the grill. They are SO fast, SO easy, and SO delicious.

Italian Sausage and Peppers Cheeseburgers

Ground sweet (aka mild) or spicy Italian sausage are shaped into patties then cooked in a skillet on the stovetop or on a sizzling grill before being topped with sliced provolone cheese. Each cheesy burger patty is topped with seared peppers and onions before being devoured. I am telling you, these burgers are a dead ringer for my Crock Pot Sausage and Peppers except they’re quick and easy. I also love that the components can be prepped several days ahead of time. Form the sausage burger patties and slice the peppers and onions up to two days ahead of time then seal everything tightly and refrigerate. They’re ready to rock when you’re ready to eat and dinner will be on the table in about 15 minutes. Yes!

How to Make Italian Sausage and Peppers Cheeseburgers

Start by forming four burger patties out of a pound of sweet/mild or hot Italian sausage. Place a large skillet over heat that’s just a touch above medium then, when it’s hot, add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side or until the burgers are cooked through. Place a slice of provolone cheese on top of each patty then place a lid on top of the skillet and allow them to melt. Alternatively, you could do all of this on the grill.

Meanwhile, heat 1-1/2 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil in another large skillet over medium-high heat then add 1 sliced small yellow onion and 1 sliced small bell pepper (I used half green and half red for color.) Season with homemade seasoned salt then saute until crisp tender, 7-8 minutes.

Place the cheeseburgers on top of buns (I misted these Schar buns with extra virgin olive oil then sprinkled with garlic salt before broiling – HIGHLY recommend,) then pile the seared peppers and onions on top and dig in. I hope you love these cheeseburgers with a twist as much as we do — enjoy!
